Titans News · Titans extend their season

Taylor was able to overcome a 4 run deficit to defeat Elwood 9-7. Jaylen Harris got  the win for Taylor going 6 innings, giving up 7 runs, on 6 hits, 5 walks, and 5 strikeouts. BJ Pemberton came on to pitch the 7th inning for the save. At the plate, Clay Brubaker was 3-3 with a homerun, and Colby Devenport had a 2-RBI single. The Titans took an early 1 run lead in the top of the first, but that proved to be short lived. Elwood answered with 4 runs in the bottom of the frame. Elwood added another run in the 3rd inning to make it 5-1. Taylor fought back, and in the top of the 5th  inning they put up 5 runs to take a 6-5 lead. However, once again it proved to be short lived because Elwood pushed across 2 runs in the bottom half of the 5th inning to regain their lead 7-6. The Titans answered again pushing across 1 run in the 6 to tie the game, and scored two more runs in the top of the 7th inning to take a 9-7 lead. BJ Pemberton came on in relief, and gave up a lead off hit, but induced a double play on the very next batter. Pemberton then struckout the next batter to give Taylor the 9-7 victory.  Coach Dill said, ” I’m so proud of our guys. We talked about how all year these have been the type of situations we have been faced with, and why would we think this game was going to be any different. They responded an inning later with 5 runs, and I’m sure that gave them the confidence that this game was winnable for them. When Elwood took that early lead I knew the guys were thinking, not again, but to their credit they continued to have great approaches at the plate, and in the end that was a big part of why they won. We had 13 walks and that’s a testament to, not only knowing the game plan, but also executing it. Over the last 4 or 5 games, we have been much better about deciding on what our approaches should be at the plate, and then the boys have been better about going out there and executing it. Clay Brubaker had one of his best games of the year at the plate. He had 2 walks,2 singles, and a homerun and his at bats were so crucial to this win. I thought after he hit that homerun the guys decided they could overcome the deficit. Colby Devenport had a huge 2-run single, and Jaylen Harris gave us 6 strong innings. It wasn’t his best outing, but he battled and kept the game close enough for us to have a chance. BJ wanted the ball in the 7th, and the rest of the coaching staff told me to roll him out there, and in the end, you want a senior out there on the bump to finish a tight game like that. This team has taken that motto of “play all 7” and ran with it. Tonight they played all 7 innings, and the game rewarded that approach.”  Taylor is back in action vs Madison Grant Saturday at Highland Park with a 5pm start time
